Santa Veronica

Santa Veronica, seventeenth century, oil on canvas, cm 196X146.

The painting bears the attribution to a Tuscan artist active during the early seventeenth century and its dimensions suggest its ancient ecclesiastical position. The image depicts Saint Veronica intent on praying in the presence of the Holy Face: according to the Christian tradition, in fact, the ‘pious woman’ present at the passion of Jesus, cleansed his face with a linen cloth, on which the imprint (the so-called ‘Veil of Veronica’). Although of devotional value, the image is interesting for how the author has described the room and the pieces of still life; observe for example the realistic rendering of the window and the brightness of the environment.
